A stray showed up on St. Patrick's Eve of 2006. Meowed until we fed him. Ended up taking him in and have had him since. He's been neutered and is about 2-3 years old. We just discovered he is a Turkish Van. He is like a dog, loves our German Shepherd and has the most incredibly soft fur. My favorite look is when he is on his back with his eyes half shut. A sweetie I hope to have for many years.

A Turkish Van awaits adoption at the Agoura Hills shelter (just a bit north of LA). He's 10 years old, has been at the shelter almost 2 months (since the beginning of April 2007), and is quite lovely. Is there anyone in the SoCal area who would like a sweet Van?

My Royal Turk had been abandoned during a move, and was surviving in the ravine for several months. He sheltered himself in a neighbour’s shed. The winter was coming, and I took him in. I am not sure how old he was in the beginning-possibly 3, and I had him over 12 years. He immediately fell in love with my year old golden retriever, was ALWAYS playful, gentle, affectionate-even though he was a male he had the gentleness and affectionate nature of a female cat (and this remained consistent even after his wilderness experience). He loved water so he was easy to keep pristine white (but was meticulous about his long white coat with only his feet peeking out. He was my alarm clock one minute before it went off each morning to go in to teach, he would leap onto the bed, walk up the middle of my body, and stretch out with his whiskers tickling under my chin and purr me awake. A cat becomes what it has experienced. If you don’t know its previous experiences with people, this may be why you see this behaviour. I currently have 10 ravine feral cats which are genuinely wild. I have fed them all winter, and they have learned to sit at a distance at first and look into my smiling eyes. One step at a time, they have lost their fear, replaced by trust of one person. Several come right to me and roll onto their backs for tummy rubs –we had 30 below Celsius weather January and February…and they allow me to hold them and pull off the hunks of frozen snow caked to their lush winter coats. If you remain consistently gentle they will learn to trust you as an individual, even if others have frightened them off. Nola

I live in Toronto. I am a retired teacher with time to dedicate to the things I love. I have always owned collies, golden retrievers, and labs. I love cats but only had one cat which was a Turkish Van neutred male(ginger tail and hat).Cheyenne was a wonderful fellow, female affectionate temperment-always curious, gentle, playful and calm. Easy to keep pure white-because he loved swimming and would easily go into the laundry tub. His silky white coat reached the floor and covered his legs with only paws peeking out. Currently I rescue our ravine cats. I would love to locate a Turkish Van pair for breeding in the Toronto area. In my searches, I haven't found any reliable contacts in the Toronto area.(most that I have located are UK, Australia, and U.S. I want to visit and hold the kittens to sense if they are the right ones, so I need a closer source. Do you know of any reputable contacts or even individuals with pure Turkish Vans with male and female kittens (not neutred?)

Is this breed noted for being very excitable when nervous, ie. lashing out at legs and hands. Do they settle down after a while? Would like some reassurance from Turkish owners/breeders if someone would be kind enough to reply. Thank you.

Webmaster comments   Turkish Vans can be very playful, especially when they're younger, but as they get older they should settle down. Any cat that is nervous or unsettled is liable to lash out if it feels threatened, so its probably best to let it settle in its own time. Be patient, gentle, and loving, and eventually it'll pay off.

After bragging about my cat to more people than I can count, I finally realized she wasn't a calico. I adopted my cat when she was 6-7 months old and believed she had been a person in another life. She is the best cat I've ever owned and will love her forever. Her name is Dixie. I have enjoyed your site and the wonderful information and photos. I would be glad to share photos or receive photos of others Turkish Vans.

We rescued our Turkish Van from a shelter. After having spent the last three years with "Stuart Little" (although he's approx. 20lbs--and isn't fat) we wish we would have also adopted his sister. We just didn't know how lovable Vans are, in fact, we didn't know he was a Turkish Van when we rescued him. He definitely acts more like a dog than a cat and enjoys getting wet which I've never seen a cat enjoy. He is very regal and particular. He has his own chair in my office and will get mad if anyone is sitting in it when he want to "be with dad". If you would like to see a pic of our pride and joy click on the "home" icon above.

I adopted my cat Pipsqueek from the shelter in Jan 2004 and never thought he was any one particular breed. Then I heard somebody mention Turkish Van and I looked it up. Sure enough, that's what Pipsqueek is. If the pictures weren't enough proof, your description of the personality and characteristics was. That description Nailed him. Pipsqueek is now 3 years old and I wouldn't trade him for the world.

I recently learned that My husband had adopted a turkish van from a shelter 7 years ago. He knew that the cat had a different personality but didnt know why. I recently found a book on cats and spoted a cat swimming marked the same as ours. Our cat loves the water so I bought the book and came home to look up a turkish van on the internet. Lo and behold this sight popped up with every cat marked alike and the description for his personality fit him to a tee. It looks like sombody's cat in mas. must have escaped from the wood shed and done some funny business. Quickly is a great personalityed cat and when it is time for another we will probly get another turkish van.

What a terrific website! I have 2 "Turkey girls" of that I feel certain! They are both pure white with the "odd-eyes". Angel seems to fit the description of a typical Turkish Angora but I wonder if Kinkle mite be the Turkish Vankedisi. She is definately "dog-like" and meows until she gets her running water to play in, in the sink. Sadly, they have no papers. They were saved from negligient owners after tumbling into the street in front of a car. I never had such loving, playful, intelligent cats.

Allergic to cats?

My husband is moderately allergic to cats. Until two years ago, we had a mostly-black, male cat who we had to put to sleep at the age of 16. Because of my husband's cat allergy, we were not going to get another cat, which broke our hearts. I happened to read a small note in the National Geographic magazine about medical studies that indicated that white, or light-colored cats are less allergenic than dark cats, and females are less allergenic than males, and if they are spayed, they are even less allergenic. The Internet does support this information! We went to the local cat shelter looking for a spayed female who was as white as possible, and we found our Jolie, who we just discovered is a Van! My husband's allergies are now 98 percent gone. She can lie on his chest and he is symptom-free!

what this seems to mean, of course, is that the Van could be the ideal cat for those who suffer from cat allergies because they are mostly white. Those with severe allergies may still not be able to have a cat at all, however.

Maybe a spayed, mostly-white, female Van could be the purrfect cat for an allergic cat lover? This is worth studying more, I think....
