hi, i used to have a van cat when i was a kid. her name was snowy, as she was all white and had one blue and one green eye. so cute! we had her for 8 years, but then she disappeared. this happened about 10 years ago. i still miss her loads, as she was such a character and my friend! she used to pick me up from the busstop when i came home from school and we used to go for walks together (without a lead, although we used a lead when she was a kitten, so she wouldn't run off). she used to scare off the neighbours' dogs and even the foxes in our garden! snowy wasn't keen on water and she was petrified of the vacuum cleaner, i guess it must have been the noise. she was such a sweetheart and i wish i knew what happened to her. sadly, even though we searched for her everywhere and checked out all the animal rescues in our area, we never found her again. i recommend van cats to anyone who wants to have a fun cat with character, rather than a house cat. they're the best!!

Just visited this site while searching the web for info about Turkish Vans. I am doing an assignment for college and have to research three breeds of cat. I have enjoyed finding out about this lovely breed and their history.

Hi, We acquired a Turkish Van from the Humane Society which classified as a calico. For the first few months we had her we had no idea that her unique markings actually were breed related. We named her Jazmine and she definitely has all of the traits and characteristics I have read about. She is a wonderful kitten and loves us. She is just right for our family and she is definitely loved, cherished and spoiled. If there is anyone else in my area that has such a cat, I would love to share stories!

I have a Van/Calico cross named Aggie.
A little over a year ago I seen this black and white print out ad in a pet food shop.
At that time Aggie was fostered by this kindly Polish family, she had this wound on the back of her neck and it healed nicely.
Aggie was territorial to the point where I almost gave her away the first four months since I had her. The terriorialism has substantially quieted.
Today she has four others she still fights with occassionally.
She has this odd habit of licking me, especially if I stroked her fur. Is this a trait of Van? You know how rough a cat's tongue is!
Aggie has been with me for a happy year and hopefully many more to come.

Hi, just looking at pictures of Turkish Vans and came across this. My 17 year old Turkish Van Skittles painlessly passed away this evening while i was at work. I'm 23 and he's been my best friend almost my whole life. As devestated as I am right now, I wanted to share with everyone what a wonderful cat he was. Still as energetic and loving as he was as a kitten, always knowing when I was upset and there to comfort me, and a very important piece of my life. So you can imagine what a shock it is. When I got him he picked me out and had been at my side ever since. He will always be a part of my life, as I'm sure other Van owners feel about their's. As close to a person as you can get for a cat, and always undersanding. ~Tiff

after realising that my one year old cat harri has a passion for water i decided to look deeper into it and when i found your site and read it me and my father both realised that harri has a history and has the turkish van as his ancestory. he is a pure white cat with one blue eye and one amber coloured eye and is a great love for water he loves baths and we often look out the window and find him in next doors pond, he loves walking with me or my father around the garden his personality is exactly how the turkish van is described its amazing it actually bought tears to my dads eyes as we now know why harri acts more like a dog rather than a cat. he loves climbing and is always knocking things off our kitchen units plus he gets great pleasure out of head butting us just to get a fuss. i just want to thank you because everything about harri now makes sense we thought he was just a one off cat when really he has an amazing background.

I have ended up with a delightful cat. After a trip to the Vet, I noticed the Turkish Van on the chart. It is my Pig-Pig. Yes, he likes water, yes he is very sensitive to noise, yes, he is into everything. He is terrific.

My name is William Andrews and I am 10 years old. Recently my cat, (Akdamar) Hazine died peacefully in her sleep, a few years after her brother Kibar Bey who died in 2000. Mum and Dad got them from Joyce Johnson in September 1988 so Hazine was nearly 17 years old. I began to get to know Hazine really well when I was about 4 years old and we used to run around the garden practising for my sports day. I was 5 years old when Kibar Bey died, his nickname was Kipper. He was quite scary and he bit me hard on my leg when I was 3 because I used to screech whenever I saw him. He obviously didn't like it! I have grown up with 2 lovely cats, at first it was Mum and Dad's responsibility to feed them, as I grew up I used to help with feeding and cleaning the litter tray. I miss my cats very much and wish they were still here. I am crying as I write this because they were wonderful. My Van Cats were the best ever. I hope the Johnsons get to read this and know how much pleasure Chulkatud Latufka's offspring brought. William xxxxx

My Van is called Arthur and is quite a character - Since I got him 4 years ago , life has been exciting. We had to rescue him from under a pontoon in the Marina two years ago, and last November he went missing for 48 hours and was finally located ( due to his loud cries !) in a drain. We had to get Dynorod to come and rescue him!! Everyone around loves him , not only becuase he is so beautiful, but because his escapades are so entertaining! Here is a pensive shot of Arthur..

great site!! We have two boys that are ten now, which we got from a home in the dartford area of kent as kittens. We had never heard of Van cats until they went to the cattery for our holidays and someone said to the owner 'oh youve got some turks in' When we found some photos its obvious that they are turkish vans, especially 'CARLING' who is the spitting image of the cat on the homepage. His brother 'GUSCOTT' (yes I am a rugby fan) is smooth coated but with the van markings. Both are superb cats with real character but yes they are wilful and sometimes difficult. At this moment GUS is climbing up my leg because I am not paying him attention. They both like water and we have caught CARLING in next doors pond When the sad time comes we would always look for van cats and try to give a home to rescue cats because I cannot imagian what our lives would be like without a 'van' around to liven it up. As for their origin does anyone know of a wandering tom van cat in the dartford area about ten years ago
